Mailbag request - 5k/1k spectacular
First off, we’re going to do a mailbag coming up to celebrate 1,000 subscribers here and the impending 5,000 subscribers on the Dieter and Hutch channel. It’ll be both here and on the channel.

Free roster cuts tool!
I’ll have a 53-man roster prediction coming after the Titans game. On that note, I want to reintroduce you to Sickos.Football.
It’s the site I built for Dieter and I to host the draft guide, but I’ve built out a free tool to look at the depth chart, to handle roster cuts and to track the 49ers’ cap situation.
Please go check it out. It’ll evolve as roster cuts get done, and it’ll be a place to find anything new from us throughout the year. Looks a bit like this, and comes with field view:
What’s coming from the Hutch Report
Throughout the season, there will be plenty of good stuff here. We’ll have columns, some breakdowns, mailbags, occasional videos. The most steady thing will be the grades. If you’re unfamiliar, here are the season-long grades from last year:
The 49ers' FINAL 2025 Trench Grades: Divisional Round + Season Long
Hi folks. There are quite a few new people here. Welcome!
I hand track these throughout the year, which is immensely time-consuming. As such, I’m planning to move to probably grading one side of the ball every week. That way we have a season-long framework.
If I can do both sides, I will. But I’m going to plan on doing one, with the other as a bonus. The way I handle that is up to you:
If you have any other feedback, requests, or anything at all you’d like to know, let me know!

Hi
Keep up the good work
Question: After the draft, the media and nfl blogosphere seemed to my eye to almost universally pan the 49ers draft picks this year. It also appeared that the consensus was that this years talent pool was poor.
In view of this, after seeing some practices and a preseason game do you see any evidence that the consensus is wrong?
Instead of a reach could Stribling be a great trade down for a quality player? (Getting great talent at a lower annual salary price)
Could Black be a really talented back who is a leader?
Could OSA be a great use of a 3rd round pick in a weak draft?
Could Duggar be a risky but potentially shoot the moon pick using a trade acquired pick (the draft pool is so weak why not try for some upside?)
Have you changed your opinion on the Niners draft at all? (Granted, the verdict will be in in 4 years. Based on what u see was it a reasonable draft?)
Thanks in advance for your thoughts
Question: with yet another year of “best laid plans” for offense already getting waylaid by injuries, it kind of feels like another season of not quite good enough. I’ll be honest that I respect Shanahan but he is reminding me of his dad: good enough to ensure a professional performance, but kind of coasting on past success while seeing other teams pass him by. It seems like the same storylines for the past several years … over-reliance on brittle/aging/expensive veterans, inability to get the most out of cheap young players, same longtime assistant coaches being stubborn, etc.
Seeing some of the other longer tenured coaches who were good but didn’t get over hump get let go (Tomlin, McDermott) does this anything feel different this year as far as expectations? Any chance the 49ers decide to blow up the roster this year? With Maraathe gone does that change the power arithmetic?
